Callum's 9 Frames Title Sequence - SkyFall

  • The amount of titles often differs in the title sequence but when looking at Skyfall there were 27 Titles, on more than one point there were 4-5 names on one screen showing how many titles there are.
  • Skyfall's audio is the soundtrack to Adele which adds a element of individuality to the clip.
  • The visual is very slow paced with a relaxed atmosphere which builds a element of suspense and tension.

9 Frames Title Sequence - Captain America: The Winter's Soldier

There was 29 titles throughout this title sequence which is quite a lot considering it was only 2 minutes long. Also there was only one soundtrack used the whole way through and no extra sound. The visuals were all animated and quite simplistic which used mainly black and white as you can see in the nine frames above, there was only red frame.

What have I learnt from this task?
- From this task, I have developed my understanding of the numerous concepts of film openings
- I have also become aware of the importance of title credits in film opening, as they are essential in informing the audience about all the background people involved - 'the unsung heroes'; they are invisible to the audience but play a major role in making the film a critical success.
- From the producers and directors, to the suppliers of ink and paint, everyone involved in the production of this film is pivotal to its success.

Callum's Preliminary evaluation

What worked well and were our strengths?

  • We did not find it hard to come up with a storyline or idea in which we had to include certain scenes.
  • As a group we were strong with out editing and made our time very efficient when it came to cutting down our clips.
  • The setting that we chose turned out to be better than we first thought with the bench being right next to the door allowing our recording a much easier job.
  • We included all the scenes that we had to from the specification that we got given at the very start and did not take a great deal of time recording our actual scenes giving us more time if we needed to improve or record any scenes again if we had to at a later date.
What could we of done better if we were to do it again?
  • We did not take enough time when recording which was our downfall, we could of taken a lot more time to try and make each scene perfect and to make sure no mistakes were made.
  • Our timing for the recording of the film was bad as we wasted 10mins waiting for the set we chose to be free with the lower years having to get changed and come to their lessons through the  door we wanted to use.
  • We did not record enough footage in order to try and construct a 1minute clip, our clip was less than 40seconds and it had a few scenes where we had left some of our recording equipment was still in the camera shot when we were recording, little mistakes that could have been very easy and quick to correct.

Preliminary Evaluation

What went well:
  • Firstly, we included all of the required scenes which were the walking to the destination, some close up shots of going through a door and the confrontation with someone else.
  • We kept to the 180 degree rule when filming the conversation as we had some over the shoulder shots and one shot from the front. This was so the conversation flowed well and you knew where the people where at all times.
  • We added in a nice fitting soundtrack playing in the background as i walked along with a comedy aspect when i fell over.
  • Our continuity editing was quite good as we made the clips put together look continuous and it flowed well.
  • Also we broke the 180 degree rule slightly to get different angles when me and Liam were speaking. This was to make the audience clear of the characters surroundings.
Even better if:
  • The preliminary was only 36 seconds long which is very short, so next time we would have to make the clip longer by either having a longer conversation or having to make the journey to the person longer.
  • In one scene when doing an over the shoulder shot you can see the camera stand in the background which is very sloppy and we should have checked each clip more thoroughly to make sure nothing like that happens.
  • We chose a bad time to film as there was a lesson going on in the room next to us, so the background noise was extremely loud  and it was quite hard to hear us, next time we will find a better location.
  • Our match on action was ok but we didn't really get close enough to the door, so next time we can get different angles of the door, get a better close up and make it a bit clearer.
  • When me and Liam were talking, we used shot reverse shot. We didn't do it very well though as the camera was shaky and at one point we could see the tripod in the background of the shot. This was very bad from us and next time we should watch our clips back to make sure it is perfect and try stabilise the camera.

Liam's Evaluation of Preliminary Task

WWW

- The weather on the day of filming was dry, which enabled us to take our time to film the exterior shot of Tom walking through the door.
- The setting proved to be appropriate, especially with the fact that the set of doors and the seat where the conversation takes place are adjacent to one another
- The editing process also went well, in that the transitions used and straight cuts creates a flow to the film, as well as making the audience feel as if they are there on-set.

EBI

- To improve, I feel we should have filmed 1 minutes worth of content, as opposed to just 30 seconds. However, I think that within those 30 seconds, the content is effective, and covers the ultimate aims of the preliminary task.
- Another effect we could add in the future is the use of more vibrant transitions which evoke the use of shape and patterns. The use of black and white in some scenes could also be added, to create a sense of time period. But overall, we are pleased with the preliminary task.

Rule of Thirds - Group Post

What is the Rule of Thirds?

The rule of thirds is applied by aligning a subject with the guide lines and their intersection points, placing the horizon on the top or bottom line, or allowing linear features in the image to flow from section to section. The theory is that if you place points of interest in the intersections or along the lines that your photo becomes more balanced and will enable whoever  looks at the image to interact with it more naturally. Studies have shown that when viewing images that people’s eyes don't normally look at the centre of the shot, they usually focus on one of the intersection points. Using the rule of thirds works with this natural way of viewing an image rather than working against it.

Examples:

The above  is a bad example of the Rule of Thirds due to the fact that the person is positioned in the centre of the screen. This is not the viewers focus point as we don't tend to look directly in the middle. Also the person is wearing a dark blazer which blends in with the background so it is hard to see him.

The above picture is a good example of the Rule of thirds rule due to the fact that the person is positioned more to the left of the image where the intersections of the lines would be. This is the audiences main focus point so it will grab their attention almost instantly. Not only this but the light coming from the end of the tunnel makes the person more visible and he is away from the dark shadow on the right.

Tom's Murder Mystery Evaluation

This task required us to come up with a random scene that would be from a TV drama for this preliminary task. We came up with the idea of a murder mystery, inspired from the program Midsummer Murders.

First, we had to pitch the story and what was going to happen in the scene before we headed out and filmed. We collectively came up with unique ideas for the final piece. I was filming and Callum (victim) and Liam (murderer) were acting in it.

What went well:

  • We successfully pitched ideas and came up with scene very fast.
  • We used varying camera angles and distances in our shots so that it is quite diverse.
  • The lighting was used to or advantage as we could see the characters well down this normally dark alley.
  • I changed the camera angle up high at 0:55 seconds to make it looks like security camera. I also changed the colour to black and white as security cameras are generally black and white.

Even Better If:

  • The scene when Callum was walking along the wall was a bit too long so we could have shortened it.
  • If we had more time editing we could have corrected the sound as there was some background noise.
  • The camera was at an angle and shaky at times, this looked a bit over the top and we could have used this affect less.

Liam - Individual Evaluation - 1 Minute Film

Brief Synopsis

'Murder Mystery' , recorded by Tom Gilbert featuring Liam Nolan and Callum Gordon as lead actors on 9th October 2014. Murder scene in an alley way during an autumn afternoon. Edited by Liam, Tom and Callum.

WWW

The choice of location (alley way near the school gym) for the scene was ideal. The location choice enabled us to instigate a storyline instantly. Another positive aspect was the weather on the day of filming. This enabled us to take our time and make adjustments when necessary. The editing process also went well. The use of continuity editing was effective, in that the scenes flowed seamlessly from one to the other. The establishing shot for this scene is in the alley way which features the perpetrator (Liam) strolling towards the camera.

EBI

Some of the camera movements appear to be over-exaggerated. For example, the zooming in and out effect at the beginning could be stabilised by use of the tripod, rather than hand-held camera use. But on the contrary, we are pleased with the performance.

Callum's Evaluation of the One minute Film

There are 3 important terms for continuity editing : 180 degree rule, shot reverse shot and match on action. All three of these were used in our preliminary task and we plan to try and use them when we film our opening to add a range of angles and keep the audience interested.

WWW:
  • We worked well as a group and performed very effectively with the time we had to produce the middle part to ' Murder Mystery'.
  • We all wanted to have our own preferred roles within the group which worked as a positively as morale was high.
  • When coming up with a idea we all agreed that doing something based around a murder allowed us to use our setting and props to their full potential.

EBI:
  • If we would of had more time we could of taken more care when filming the main parts to it , this would let us perfect the scene that the whole clip was based around.
  • Although conditions and the weather was good the wind meant that we couldn't use any of the sound - we only found this out when we got to the editing stage however there was very little speech needed.
